What to Expect During a Professional Irrigation System Installation

irrigation system installation

Installing an irrigation system is one of the most effective ways to protect your landscape, conserve water, and reduce manual labor. Whether you’re a homeowner in Grand Rapids or you manage a commercial property in Ada or Holland, knowing what to expect during a professional installation can make the process smoother and less stressful for you. Here’s a breakdown of what the typical irrigation system installation process looks like.

SOAK’s Irrigation System Installation Process

1. Initial Consultation and Site Evaluation

The first step is a thorough on-site assessment. We can’t make recommendations unless we know your property, so we’ll walk through it with you to evaluate the size of your lawn, the types of plants you have and where they are located, sun exposure, slope, and any other existing landscape features.

Because we’re in West Michigan, this step may include soil testing (to determine if you have sandy lakeshore soil or heavier inland clay). We’ll talk with you about regional water pressure and seasonal weather conditions so we can make the best recommendations for your property.

During this visit, your technician will also gather details about:

  • Local water source and municipal regulations
  • Whether a permit is required (this varies by township)
  • Lawn zones and usage patterns (gardens, turf, shaded areas, etc.)

2. System Design & Planning

After gathering site data, we’ll create a custom irrigation system plan for you that includes:

  • Proper zoning to meet the needs of different plants
  • Drip irrigation areas (ideal for flowerbeds and vegetable gardens)
  • Coverage layout using a combination of spray heads and rotors
  • Smart controller setup for automated, water-efficient programming

This plan will also account for seasonal changes because this is, after all, Michigan, and prolonged cold weather creates challenges for sprinkler systems. Because of this we design our systems with winterization in mind, allowing easy access to blowout points and minimizing pipe exposure.

3. Installation Day(s)

Once you approve the irrigation system design we create, the installation typically takes 1–2 days for a residential system and 2–4+ days for larger commercial properties. Here’s what happens:

  • Utility lines are marked to avoid damage
  • Trenches are dug (usually with minimal disruption)
  • Piping and valves are installed
  • Sprinkler heads and drip lines are placed
  • The controller is installed and programmed
  • We test the irrigation system thoroughly

West Michigan’s mix of weather and soil types means that we take extra care to make sure that  pipe depth and head positioning are correct. Sandier lakeshore areas may require more secure anchoring, while clay-heavy soils need careful grading for water flow.

4. Final Walkthrough and Training

After installation, we will walk you through how the irrigation system works, explaining the smart controller functions, and demonstrating how to make seasonal adjustments. This also includes:

  • Best watering practices for summer droughts and spring saturation
  • How and when to schedule professional winterization services
  • What to expect during spring start-up

5. Ongoing Maintenance and Support

We also won’t leave you hanging after the install. We want your irrigation system to keep functioning smoothly and efficiently for years, so we offer seasonal inspection services. These include:
